Why do my electrics require inspection and testing?

Current electrical regulations BS7671 state that at least every 10 years house wiring should be inspected and tested.

How long does an inspection take?

This is dependent on the size of the property but usually it takes a few hours. Inspections are always carried out with a minimum of disruption to you and during normal working hours.

What is PAT?

Electrical installations in homes and flats are now subject to new building regulations – namely Part P. This regulation will be enforced by local authorities and failure to comply is a criminal offence.

The law states that:- ‘Fixed electrical installations in dwellings shall be suitable designed, installed, inspected and tested so as to provide reasonable protection against their being the source of a fire or a cause of injury to persons.’

What is Part P?

This is part of a HSE (Health and Safety Executive) guideline that states all portable and handheld equipment must be well maintained and in full working order. Following the inspection results must be logged for future reference.

What do I need to comply with Part P?

To comply with Part P regulations you must register with a government approved scheme which allows the work to be self certified by an NICEIC Domestic or Approved Electrician, or you must inform the local authority so they can begin proceedings. Liaising with the local authority is generally a little more drawn out.
